Tip! Prep Your Skin

Spray tans are pretty much the easiest way to look effortlessly glowing, but if you put in just a little prep, you’ll get even more out of it. We suggest shaving any part of your body you normally shave the morning of your tan instead of waiting until after. Also, give your body a good exfoliation.

You want as little getting in between your skin and the product. That includes lotion. Use as little as possible, if any, before your tan. Moisturizers are made to form a barrier to keep moisture in, but that can also act as a little repellant to the spray tan and prevent the color from fully developing. The smoother your skin is beforehand, the more even and glorious your skin will look after.

That said, a little lotion on your knees, elbows and ankles will keep those areas from getting too dark. Use our barrier cream on your palms, fingernails and toenails!

Trick: Wear dark and baggy clothing with flip flops to your appointment. The tighter your clothes, the more likely you are to streak!

Tip! Get Your Tan in the Evening

Wait until you’ve worked, exercised and showered for the day before getting your spray tan. This gives your color time to develop. It’s best to wait as long as possible before showering, that’s why getting it done in the evening allows you to go to sleep and wake up with beautiful and fully developed color.

The heat you generate as you sleep helps the color really get into the skin. When you take your next shower, use lukewarm, not hot water, and don’t scrub your skin. Pat your skin dry, don’t rub. All of this ensures you keep your color as long as possible and that it fades evenly.

Trick: If you can’t stand the starchy smell of the tan, a spritz of vanilla-scented body spray will cancel out a bit of the smell. If you can’t hang with vanilla, citrus scents work well too.

Tip! Let Your Color Fade

It’s tempting, but ultimately not a great idea, to tan again before the first one has faded off evenly. If you do tan too often, over old tans, you can end up with an uneven and patchy tan that can take on an unnatural color. Depending on your body’s rate of cell turnover, your tan may last between five and nine days.

Trick: After the first few days, lightly polish your body and do that every other day. This will just help the color naturally fade evenly.
